Wind Power

Mr. Bouchard has been working with our class to study wind power as a renewable energy source.  This enrichment opportunity is tied to our electricity unit and stresses the design engineering process.  The focus of the mini-course is to integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); an up and coming concept that will be an important theme in the new common core standards.  In small groups students learn how a wind turbine generates electricity.  They test and record voltage using the blades provided in the wind energy kits and later design their own blades.  They also learn how to create a mini “windfarm” by wiring all of their towers together in a serial circuit.  They work within the design engineering process to fine tune the efficiency of their blades.  Along the way they conduct experiments, record data and learn to use instruments to measure low voltage electricity and wind speed.   Ask your child about their experience.

Independent Reading Books

On Wednesday this week, all students traveled to library with their Chromebooks to use online catalogue to choose DRA leveled independent reading books.  Please take some time to check out student choices this weekend.

We trust our readers to get books back to school Monday to start our Reading Groups.
